Tailored education for CHDR Clinical Scientists
Most Clinical Scientists at CHDR follow a PhD programme, laying the foundation for their future careers. CHDR offers them the opportunity to take additional educational courses in-house or elsewhere to acquire relevant skills.
'Developing people has always been one of our strategic objectives,' says Education Director Dr Jeroen van Smeden. CHDR employees are encouraged to take courses of operational relevance, but they also have the opportunity to gain skills that will be important for their career development. This is particularly relevant for the group of Clinical Scientists, doctors, pharmacists or biomedical scientists who are responsible for the coordination of clinical studies. Their work on clinical trials provides the basis for their PhD thesis. Often, they are also training as clinical pharmacologists. After completing their PhD, many Clinical Scientists choose careers in hospitals, industry or regulatory agencies. Some of them subsequently become Senior Clinical Scientists at CHDR or rejoin the company after a few years.
Van Smeden: 'Education is particularly important for those doing PhD research. We offer our Clinical Scientists an increasingly wide range of courses, allowing each of them to choose what suits them best. For example, we have in-house courses on writing scientific publications or giving scientific presentations. But we also gave one of our Clinical Scientists the opportunity to do a course in Denmark. So we make sure that after finishing their thesis, they have the knowledge and skills to contribute to innovations and better patient care with us or elsewhere.'
